December 2004 SPEEDO LEAGUE MINOR Final
Clitheroe Dolphins concluded a successful year in fine form when they swam to third place in the Speedo League Minor Division Final.
Swimming in the competition for the first time in the Club’s 32 year history a 25 strong team travelled to the Manchester Aquatics Centre having pre-qualified for the 8 team final.
Swum in the 50 Metre Commonwealth Games venue there were 32 individual and 8 relays races to contest. After a thrilling afternoon with great swims from all the team the Dolphins held on to 3rd place by just two points. The final result included three individual wins by Elizabeth Highton and one win for Hannah Pym.
Coach Jonathan Preston said “ This is a result for all the hard work put in by the swimmers and Club volunteers. We had the youngest team at the final and I know they can only get stronger. I can’t wait for next season to start.”

December 2004 Six records fall at Annual Gala
Clitheroe Dolphins have held their Annual Gala at Ribblesdale Pool. It proved to be a very successful evening with 158 Personal Best Times recorded.
6 New Records were achieved - one of them set in 1989 by Peter Jones, who was, this time, watching his 7 yrs old son swim in the gala.
New Records Breakers were:
6yrs Girls 25m Freestyle - Rhiannon Wickham - 24.64 (Previous record of 26.31 set by Sophie Jones in 1996).
10yrs Boys 50m Freestyle - Thomas Carter - 34.54 (Previous record of 34.92 set by Bryn Phillip in 2002)
11yrs Girls 50m Backstroke - Kara Singleton - 37.50 (Previous Record 38.29 set by Rebecca Wrigley in 1994)

Dave Evitts, the County Swimming Coach, was in attendance. He presented "Future Fit Training Certificates" to 3 Club Helpers who recently completed a course that qualifies them to help with the Club's Land Training Sessions. The successful helpers are Jane Nolan, Carol Holden and Kathryn Buggie. Also completing the course but unable to attend for the presentation were David Roberts and Susan Carter.

November 2004 Seven Swim for Children in Need
On Sunday the 21st of November seven swimming sensations swam 200 lengths in two hours and raised over £200 for Children in Need. Well done to Laura Purcell, James Murdoch, Alistair Harwood, Adam Bibby, Alex Bibby, Beth Roberts and Chris Grant. Have a rest normal training resumes on Monday!!

November 2004 SPEEDO LEAGUE MINOR Round 2
Clitheroe Dolphins swimmers travelled to Warrington for the second of this season’s Speedo League competitions.
Unfortunately, the Clitheroe team was much weakened by the absence of 7 of the regular team members. Nevertheless, they finished in fourth place in a very tightly run competition.
There was drama during the Warm Up when Victoria Rodgers, who was to be the lead off swimmer, injured her knee and had to be replaced by Naomi Williams. She swam a Personal Best time of 47.86, an improvement of 4.39 seconds on her PB giving her second place in the 10/11yrs Breaststroke.
Ellesmere Port were the winners with 164 points. Leyland Barracudas were second with 158 points followed by Newton Le Willows with 146 points , Clitheroe with 145 points, St. Helens with 144 points and Runcorn 71.
The team is now hoping to compete in the finals to be held at the Manchester Aquatics Centre in December.

October 2004 SPEEDO LEAGUE MINOR Round 1
Clitheroe Dolphins swimmers opened the first chapter of a new adventure when they travelled to Widnes to take part in Round 1 of the Speedo League.
When the meet commenced it was 11 years old Alicia Walker who wrote her name into Club history by being the first swimmer to represent the Club in the Speedo League. Alicia rose to the occasion,producing a personal best time of xx.xx to win her 50m Breaststroke event. This set the tone for a very successful evening of competition. The girls came first in 14 out of 16 events. The boys provided strong support coming first or second in 10 out of their 16 events. Their combined efforts lead to a debut overall victory. The final score was - Clitheroe 209 points, Altrincham 187, Leyland B 179 and Warrington 130.
Head Coach, Jonathan Preston, said "I'm dead chuffed, we came here not knowing what to expect, but with this victory it gives us a fantastic chance of reaching December's final at the Manchester Aquatics Centre"
In all, 21 Personal Best Times were recorded.

September 2004 Sheffield Teaspoon and Time Trials
18 Club swimmers attended the 22nd Annual Teaspoon Gala held at the Ponds Forge Pool in Sheffield.
16 yrs old Mark Jaggs was very successful coming first in the 50m Breaststroke in a time of 32.93 seconds. He was 5th in the 50m Freestyle and 3rd in 50m Backstroke with brother, Paul, coming 6th in the same event. He teamed up with Paul, Guy Isherwood and Richard Stones in the Medley Relay and Freestyle Relay - the team finishing 2nd in both events.
The Dolphins held Time Trials over two Friday Evening Sessions with some spectacular results. Certificates will be awarded to the “Most Improved Swimmers” of the 25m and 50m events.

September 2004 Coach of the Year
Jonathan Preston, who is swimming coach to “Clitheroe Dolphins” and “Clitheroe Masters” Swimming Club has been named “Coach of the Year for the Ribble Valley“.
This means that he has automatically been short listed for the Lancashire County Sports Award.
Jonathan took up his position as Coach to the “Dolphins” in October 2002. Since then the Club has gone from strength to strength. There are now over 200 members, ranging in age from 5yrs to 18yrs.
Last year, the team representing Clitheroe in the Subsidiary League, finished in pole position, ensuring promotion to Division 2 next season. The Micro-League swimmers, newly promoted, finished in third place in their division, a remarkable achievement.
Two swimmers, Elizabeth Highton and Mark Jaggs, achieved National Qualifying Times. Elizabeth in the 100m and 200m Backstroke and 100m Freestyle and Mark in the 50m Breaststroke.
Masters Swimmers were also very successful with Peter Jones finishing 2nd in the 30-34yrs age group 50m Backstroke and Julie Pym, 3rd in the 40-44yrs age group 50m Freestyle in the National Championships held at the Aquatics Centre, Manchester.
Clitheroe Dolphins have extended their activities by encouraging their swimmers to attend land training sessions at Roefield Leisure Centre. These are supervised by Jane Nolan, Carol Holden, Kath Buggie, Dave Roberts and Susan Carter who have all been awarded Certificates for attending a Future Fit - Torso Training (core strength + stability) course.

July 2004 Speedo League Trial
Clitheroe Dolphins staged a very successful “In House” gala at Ribblesdale Pool . Over 70 swimmers took part and the programme was the same as that used in the Speedo League for which the Dolphins have recently been accepted. All their times were recorded to ensure that the very best team will be selected for the Speedo Galas due to start in October.
As the gala was held on American Independence Day the teams were divided into American States.
Florida emerged the winners with 116 points, closely followed by Texas with 111 points. In third place was Hawaii with 93 points and then Ohio with 75 points.
119 Personal Best times were recorded.
A total of £60 was collected by organising a quiz and a raffle in aid of 'Sport Relief'.

June 2004 MICRO LEAGUE DIV 2 ROSEGROVE
Friday, 18th of June 2004
Clitheroe Dolphins’ 9 - 12yrs old swimmers took part in their last Micro-League gala of the Season. This time the venue was Padiham Pool and the hosts were Rosegrove. In a nail biting finish, the host team emerged victorious with 131 points, closely followed by Clitheroe with 128 points. Garstang and Colne came 3rd and 4th respectively with 115 points and 108 points.

June 2004 Northern Counties ASA Age Groups Championships
Friday, 12th-20th of June 2004
Elizabeth Highton competed in the Northern Counties ASA Age Groups Championships held
at Manchester Aquatics over the last couple of weekends.
On the first Sunday her first event was the 100m free, Elizabeth was 2nd in the
penultimate heat in 1:03.78 and was placed 3rd overall. This is her third
national qualifying time for this years National Age Group Championships at
Ponds Forge, Sheffield at the end of July. Unfortunately she began to feel
unwell in the swim down but still swam in the following event, the 200m back.
Elizabeth started well but finished a disappointing 5th, this was still however
a long course p.b. of 2:35.23.
Despite qualifying for both finals, she was not fit to compete in the
afternoon, and so retired home to recover.
The following Saturday she competed in the 100m back, where she dominated the
heats winning by 2.25 seconds in 1:09.47. Second event was the 200 free where
she was disappointed to finish 17th but in a long course p.b. of 2:20.76.
In the final of the 100m back Elizabeth again dominated winning by almost 4
seconds in 1:08.96.

June 2004 MICRO LEAGUE DIV 2 HOME
Friday, 11th of June 2004
Clitheroe Dolphins hosted a Micro-League Gala at Ribblesdale pool. This was the third in a series of four and the home team, with 127 points, were runners up to Southport , convincing winners with 172 points. Garstang finished in third place - 97 points and Ormskirk fourth with 92 points.

MAY Inter Association Competition
Two Clitheroe Dolphins swimmers qualified for the Inter Association Competitions, which include swimmers from Cumbria to the North Midlands. 11yrs old Kara Singleton qualified for the 50m Breaststroke and finished 2nd in 42.67secs, in the 50M Freestyle she was 4th in a Personal Best time of 33.03 and she was 6th in the 50M Backstroke with a time of 38.18.
The Dolphins’ other qualifier was Megan Phillip who recorded 2min.57 in the 200m Butterfly, 3min.03 in the 200m Breaststroke and achieved a 4th position in the 100M Butterfly with a time of 1min.15.

Clitheroe Dolphins youngest swimmers travelled to Colne for the second Micro-League Gala of the season. They found the opposition very tough but came away runners up to Southport who scored 149 points. Clitheroe scored 117 points, Colne 103 points and Garstang 90 points.

May 2004 NORTH LANCS SUB.LEAGUE DIV 3 ROSEGROVE
Friday, 14th of May 2004
Clitheroe Dolphins have been promoted to Division 2 of the Subsidiary League after a convincing win at the last of this season's galas, this time held at Padiham Pool. Dolphins, who have an unbeaten record in Division 3, emerged convincing winners with 164 points. Host team Rosegrove were second with 146 points, followed by Garstang on 100 points and Kirkham with 86 points. The team won 22 out of the 37 events.

May 2004 MICRO LEAGUE DIV 2 LEYLAND
Sunday, 9th of May 2004
Clitheroe Dolphins attended their first Micro-League Gala of the season.
Micro-League involves the club’s youngest swimmers, ages from 9 - 12yrs.
This gala, held at Leyland, was the first attended since being promoted to
Division 2 at the end of last year. In spite of many team swimmers being unable
to attend, the remaining team excelled themselves by coming joint first with Leyland
on 127 points, followed by Rosegrove with 125 points and Colne with 105 points.

April 2004 CLITHEROE OLYMPICS

Clitheroe Dolphins held a hugely successful “Mini Olympics Event” at Ribblesdale Pool.
Many of the Club’s 8 - 12 yrs old swimmers took part. The 80+ competitors were divided
into countries - America, Australia, Russia and China. The lead changed frequently but America emerged victorious with 72 points, followed by Australia with 66 points,
China 59 points and Russia 50 points.

Ex-Dolphins at the Masters Nationals
24th & 25th of April 2004
Two Ex Clitheroe Dolphins swimmers made their mark when they competed in the
British Masters Swimming Championships at the Manchester Aquatic Centre.
Now swimming for Clitheroe Masters, Julie Pym took the Bronze medal in the
40/45 yrs Freestyle Event with a time of 31.06 seconds. Peter Jones, who only
returned to swimming five months ago after a 12 year break, came 2nd in the
30/35 yrs 50m Backstroke Event with a time of 29.80 seconds. In addition, he
swam the magnificent time of 24.89 in the Men’s Freestyle Relay to help the
Clitheroe team of four into 6th place.

Saturday, 24th of April 2004
Clitheroe Dolphins continued their unbeaten run when they travelled to
Kirkham for the third Subsidiary League Gala of the 2004 season.
Competing against Garstang, Rosegrove and Darwen, they finished convincing
winners with a score of 150 points, 19 points ahead of second placed
Rosegrove. Darwen scored 129 points and Garstang 87points.

April 2004 Blackburn Schools Gala
10 years old Kara Singleton, gave some impressive performances in the
Blackburn Schools Gala.She came first in both of her individual events
:25m Breaststroke and 75m Individual Medley.In addition, she helped her
school, Salesbury Church of England Primary to come first in the Medley Relay
and second in the Freestyle Relay

Elizabeth at the Olympic Trials
Clitheroe Dolphins & BOBCATS swimmer Elizabeth Highton swimming in the Olympic Trials at just 13 years of age came an impressive 30th in the 100metres backstroke with a time of 1.08.35
Elizabeth competed in a category that British Swimming National Performance Director, Bill Sweetenham, described as “one of Britain’s stronger events” and which eventually produced the maximum of two Olympic qualifiers in Katy Sexton and Sarah Price.
Elizabeth’s performance is all the more impressive when you consider that the qualifiers from this event are expected to make the Olympic final and there are high hopes of an Olympic medal. Elizabeth is now ranked 3rd in her age in the country.

March 2004 Lancashire Championships and Age Group competitions
Held on the 13th,14th,20th & 21st of March 2004, three swimmers represented
Dolphins at the recent Lancashire Championships and Age Group competitions
held at Everton Park Sports Centre.An outstanding winner in the Age Group section
was 13yrs old Elizabeth Highton. She easily won her heat in a time of 1.06.83,
6.16 seconds ahead of her nearest rival and came first in the Final in a
time of 1.07.52. In the Women’s Open Championship Event, she finished an
astonishing third in 1.07.24.Fourteen years old, Megan Phillip, was third in
the Age Group section of the 100m Breaststroke in a time of 1.27.51
Also qualifying to swim for Clitheroe was 11yrs old Bryn Phillip who achieved
a time of 1.17.08 in the 100m Freestyle.

Clitheroe Dolphins made it two in a row when they came first in a Subsidiary Gala,
this time held at Darwen.They came first in 20 out of 37 events and finished with
162 points, 36 points clear of runners-up Rosegrove ( 126points) with Darwen on
115 points and Kirkham 95 points.

February 2004 NORTH LANCS SUB.LEAGUE DIV 3 CLITHEROE

Clitheroe Dolphins hosted the first Subsidiary League Gala of the season at Ribblesdale
Pool and came away victorious.Competing against three other Division 3 teams, they showed
their superiority by winning 23 out of the 37 events and amassing a total of 154 points.
Nearest rivals were Darwen with 117 points while Kirkham gained 112 points and Garstang
102 points.
At the commencement of the gala, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of John Ellis,
Committee Member and Pool Side Helper, who passed away the previous weekend and will be
much missed. A total of £120 was raised in the raffle which will be donated to the NSPCC
in memory of John.
